Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss easily wins runoff
After election day, the a runoff vote was necessary in the race for senator in Georgia. This occurred because neithe candidate had won the 50% of votes necessary to win the election. The runoff resulted in a 57.5% to 42.5% race, in favor of the current senator, Saxby Chamliss. Chamliss is republican, meaning that the republican party now holds 41 seats in the senate, enough that the democrats can not cut off debate and force a vote in the senate. For this reason, many important political figures, including John McCain, Sarah Palin, Al Gore, and BIll Clinton have all campaigned in Georgia to try and win support for the candidate for their respective parties.
I think it’s a good thing that the democratic party does not have such a strong control over the country. This is not personal bias; I don’t think either party should have that much power while the other remains helpless. Regardless of how good or bad of a job one party would do in controlling the senate and the execturive branch, I feel that it is better for both parties to have an influence on how things go. This avoids extremism on either end and in all likelihood works for the better of the country. However, if this lack of dominating control leads to more debate and as a result, less actions being taken, it could be a bad thing.
